these are the various things that are inspiring my current projects.

Right now I am working on two big projects.

1. My senior show
(an intricate conceptual book/paper sculpture)
2. A 45 minute art film (it will be choreographed with an orchestra and full choir as they perform an original 12 movement piece.)

My senior show is March 26th, and the visual oratorio goes on tour starting April 13th. This is my internet studio space to throw all my inspirations, concepts, and progress up on the walls. Critiques welcome.

Tomorrow night I will be giving my artist talk! Here is a video of my process. I will post my talk later.

Opening Night.

the last pieces are coming together nicely. The show opens Saturday night!!!

My crit with Clifton Meador was amazing. we sat down in my studio and talked form and concept and the marriage of the two. We also had a great lunch on the house  (I grabbed enough for for the next couple meals.. thank you messiah college) with a bunch of the design family.

Clifton raved about my concept and the form of my paper. in 2007 he made a book called: Kora and the pages are unbound and almost the same dimensions as my paper! Clif is a professor at Columbia in Chicago and invited me several times to come take a look at the mfa program and spend time in their paper studio.

The body broke, breaks, and continues to break. The good news is, I have a full critique with bookmaker, writer, photographer, printmaker, and designer: Clifton Meador at 11am this Friday!!! [TOTAL energy/motivation booster!]

Somewhere in the month of January, I completely fell in love with the process of making paper, and every day I fall deeper & deeper.

and Now… after 20+ hours of extreme love and attention to every single one of these fibers… I get to make paper!!

Here’s a rundown of the process I went through this weekend to make my paper pulp.

This is how far I got with my model today- I haven’t formed the shapes that will be coming out of the canvas, or the paper heart. and I have yet to cut out of the book. But I finished the wall/gallery space accurately and made my pedestal and book to scale.

making paper the traditional Japanese way...

As soon as my kozo comes in the mail {it should be Monday at the latest} I will set up my paper making studio in the senior warehouse. And this is more or less what it will look like. I will- no doubt- be messier. I am most excited and curious about beating the fibers by hand with mallets for about 5 hours. The process is very important, I don’t want to write any part of it off. I plan to worship and pray during the 5 hours of beating/refining/separating of fibers. It’ll definitely take some discipline, I am excited to try!

I LOVE this man. I had the privilege of hearing him speak at my college about 5 years ago, and I would love to hear him speak again! He has great insights on being a Christian artist. He is a huge inspiration for the ‘Holy book’ portion of this project. This Holy book will be completely made through worship. I will be beating the kozo paper pulp, and creating the paper, painting the pages with some kind of gold pigment, and then binding the book.

EXHIBIT

Our first exhibit class was tonight. I’ll be refining my concept and making a maquette of my piece. We got our gallery placement this evening and my piece will be the first thing you see when you walk in!! Wow. exciting, humbling, and nerve-wrecking. :) I can’t wait to post some pictures and get feedback!

The major musical influences on this project so far are son lux {at war with walls and mazes}, sufjan stevens {age of adz}, and a few emily wells.

I’m looking for more music that portrays {1} the feeling of an intense on-going spiritual love & anguish, {2} a rough, gritty struggle with truth and/or the deceptive covering of truth, and {3} a repeating, emanating pulse of light and/or hope.

2:37 is what my studio is starting to look like.
